Young children, such as toddlers, are notorious for being full of energy – just ask any parent and they’ll confirm this widely-known fact. While many people know this about toddlers, they don’t realize that they NEED this energy to grow and develop properly. And, the only way toddlers and young children can get the energy they need is from the food they eat. This is why it is so important for parents to recognize a need for healthy snacks for toddlers.

By giving toddlers several snacks in addition to their daily meals, parents are providing their toddlers’ little bodies with nutrients that will be turned into the energy they need. This energy will be used to help promote healthy brain functioning, language development, motor skills and much more. Once parents are able to understand this, then they begin to understand why healthy snacks for toddlers are so important.

Everyone has heard about the importance of eating three balanced meals a day. This is especially true for toddlers. However, anyone who has a toddler, or has raised one, knows that they can be picky, and some days, they may not even be interested in food. This is another reason why several healthy snacks for toddlers throughout the day are necessary to support their growing bodies. Notice the key word is “healthy.” It is easy to give kids snacks they will love such as twinkies, donuts, candy, etc. But, all these types of snacks do is load them up with an abundance of sugar that will leave them wanting more because high-sugar foods aren’t made to last. Instead, parents need to look for healthy snacks that contain natural sugars and are designed to fill kids up and give healthy bursts of energy without crashing later.

Healthy snacks for toddlers do not have to be large or extravagant. Usually snacks around cup to cup will suffice. Many toddlers enjoy eating fruits such as bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, kiwi and cantaloupe. You can also give snacks such as whole-grain crackers, yogurt with fresh fruit and cheese sticks (or cubes). There are so many healthy options when looking for nutritious snacks for your little ones. An easy way to make the distinction between a healthy snack and an unhealthy snack is to look at the ingredients – the more natural the ingredients, the more healthy the snack.

Like I stated earlier, fruits and veggies are not the only options available for healthy snacks for toddlers. When you use whole wheat flour instead of white flour, you are instantly making homemade goodies healthier. So, if you enjoy baking, feel free to bake away – things like breads, brownies and cookies can be healthy snacks too. It’s all about the ingredients! When you start giving your toddlers the healthy snacks they need, you may also start to notice other benefits in them such as better moods and better sleeping habits. You will also be teaching them healthy habits that will be carried with them throughout their lives!

If you are stumped for ideas, try pizza. Pizza is a weight gain triple threat: high calorie, high carb, and high fat. The cheese and the meat toppings are high fat, the crust is carbohydrate dense, and the whole lot is calorie dense.
