The Amazon Kindle reader seemed to be the perfect product for Amazon. It completely dominated the e-book reader market, commanding about 60% of all e-book reader sales, and it was hard to see where the competition was coming from. There were many predictions of a “Kindle killer”, but despite the release of new readers by the likes of Sony, Barnes and Noble, Plastic Logic and Bookeen, the Kindle looked set to hold on to its number one position.

Then the Apple iPad came along and, although it is an entirely different device, it did look set to spoil the party somewhat. The iPad is not without some fairly major flaws of its own, and whilst most Apple devices seem to provoke a “love them or loathe them” response, the numbers of people who would buy almost anything with the Apple logo on it are certainly large enough to make a major dent in the sales of the Kindle.

As well as releasing new, sexy hardware, Apple also struck a deal with many of the major publishers which let them charge whatever they wanted for e-books – as long as they weren’t offered for less on any other device – the Kindle in other words. This looked set to put a bit of a spanner in the works of Amazon’s policy of providing e-books for $ 9.99 or less. It certainly seems as if the price of e-books has been creeping upwards since the launch of the iPad. It does seem a little strange that increased competition should drive prices upwards – but there you have it.

It’s a different story with the actual e-book reader hardware however. Barnes and Noble have dropped the price of their Nook reader from $ 259 to $ 199. Amazon have now dropped the price of the Kindle 2.0 from $259 to $189 – a very low number considering that it retailed at $ 359 when it was launched in February of 2009. The price of the larger format Kindle DX has also been reduced from $ 489 to $ 379, an event which coincides with the device’s first upgrade which includes a higher contrast screen and a new body color.

So the top of the range, and freshly updated, DX reader is now over $ 100 cheaper than the entry level Apple iPad – and unlike the iPad it requires no monthly internet connection fee. The iPad is, of course, considerably more than an e-book reader – and many customers will be quite happy to pay more for a more powerful device which can be used for a variety of different applications – even if it does have a considerably shorter battery life.

This downward price trend for e-book readers could be no more than a reaction to the appearance of the iPad on the scene. On the other hand, it could signal a new approach by the likes of Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Given their business structures, it would be quite possible for these companies to take advantage of a higher average e-book price by selling the hardware for less and then making more money on the actual e-book sales over the lifetime of the reader.

Since its launch in November 2007, the Kindle electronic book reader has been a great product for Amazon. Amazon’s strong association with both books and electronics was a marriage made in heaven and the Kindle, after an upgrade to Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009 followed by the introduction of the large display Kindle DX model in the summer of the same year, went on to become Amazon’s top selling product.

Over the festive period of 2009, the Kindle became Amazon’s most gifted product ever. On Christmas day of 2009, Amazon sold more Kindle books than physical volumes for the first time ever. Admittedly this was probably due to people who had received a Kindle as a Christmas gift testing it out by downloading a Kindle book or two – but it was a landmark event for Amazon and the Kindle nonetheless.

Despite the huge success of the Kindle reader, there were times when Amazon appeared to be a somewhat reluctant manufacturer. They went to a great deal of trouble to make sure that Kindle books could be read on a wide variety of different devices by people who didn’t own Kindles. Currently there are free Kindle “Apps” for the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the new iPad, the Blackberry and any device running Android. At times, Amazon looked to be in competition with itself.

However, the reasoning behind Amazon’s open policy became clear with the release of the Apple iPad. Among its many features, the iPad can be used to read e-books, and the price of e-book readers went into free fall as Apple enthusiasts rushed to get their hands on Apple’s new device. However, even as e-book reader prices were plummeting, the average price of the e-books for use with them was climbing.

The main reason behind this was the deal which Apple had negotiated with the big publishing houses prior to the iPad’s launch. This allowed publishers to fix the price for the e-book versions of their publications at whatever level they wished – just so long as the e-book wasn’t offered at a lower price for any other reader – the Kindle for example. Amazon’s strategy of selling all e-books for $ 9.99 or less was pretty well destroyed overnight – and it started to look as if the iPad was not only a “Kindle Killer” but was going to mess up Amazon’s plans for e-book sales into the bargain.

However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that Amazon’s policy of releasing free Kindle Apps for just about every device known to man was a master stroke. Each App is nothing more than an outlet for Kindle books and, given that the price of these is increasing, Amazon can now afford to drop the price3 of their Kindle reader hardware secure in the knowledge that they will make a profit from the sale of e-books over the lifetime of the reader. For that matter, even if the iPad – or any other reader – seriously dented the sale of Kindle readers, Amazon would continue to sell their Kindle books.

The Kindle reader has been the best selling item on Amazon for many good reasons. When you look at all this handy device has to offer, it is easy to see why. There are hundreds of thousands of books available for immediate download and it can be used in many places around the world. There are hundreds of periodicals to choose from and other resources, many that are free. You will even be able to keep any PDF files on hand. A Kindle is ready to go, right out of the box.

A large 6″ screen uses technology called “E ink” which is exactly what the name implies, electronic ink is displayed. This provides sharp, clean text like you would expect on the pages of a book. With the six font sizes to choose from, you can adjust the size to suit your tastes.

With the adjustable texts, if you want to have a library of large-print books, it is now yours. A Kindle uses 16 shades of gray so all the images will be clean, clear and detailed. There is the ability to pull them up to full-screen and rotate them if you wish. You will also be able to browse any text-based websites and keep up with the latest scores, access various reference materials or find maps. A built-in dictionary is at your command.

Since there is no back-lighting involved, you will find there is no glare like with typical electronic devices. Users are very impressed with the ability to use a Kindle inside, or out on a sunny beach, with no loss of clarity. There is 2 GB of internal storage. The battery will last for two weeks when you turn off the wireless capability, otherwise the battery life is cut in half, you will be able to carry it with you anywhere.

It can be recharged with the included power adapter or the USB cable which can be plugged into a computer. This will also allow you to download reading material to your computer and transfer it to the Kindle. There are applications that will sync everything for your hand-held devices or personal computer so you can always pick up right where you left off.

You’ll find an incredible amount of material to load unto your Kindle. There are almost two million public domain writings, hundreds of thousands of ebooks, over 50,000 audio books and of course the half-million books available at Amazon. You can download a segment of almost every offering from Amazon before you purchase. If you like it, a single click will secure your purchase and the book is downloaded. Many of the books will have text-to-speech capability for even more flexibility.

Another feature has the buttons used to turn the pages on both sides of the screen. Since it only weighs ten ounces and is about the thickness of a pencil, you will find it made for periods of long reading since it can be held comfortably in either hand. The Kindle will hold about fifteen-hundred books. If you should ever need to add more, all of your library is stored online for immediate access.

A Kindle reader will allow you to carry your personal library with you and keep track of where you left off in each book. You will be able to read what you want where you want on a computer or hand-held devices and keep them all in sync. Bookmarks, notations and clips saved will always be kept for your reference. Add some MP3’s for background music and reading will take on a whole new perspective.

Tired of carrying a lot of gadget that you like to read on your ride? Why not get a amazon kindle? Well, these tiny electronic gadget allows downloaded gadget to be written in it’s memory. We have what you need and a lot of kindle accessories.

No matter if you are studying in a traditional school or in a home schooling environment, there will come a time when you will come across burnout. This is something that you have to avoid so that your learning progress is not affected.

No matter if you are studying in a traditional school or in a home schooling environment, there will come a time when you will come across burnout. This is something that you must avoid so that your learning progress is not affected.

Here are a couple of useful tips that you can use in order to avoid an occurrence of home schooling burnout:

Be aware of your abilities. From the very start, you should already know your limitations and those of your child. You must be able to taking things slowly sometimes, especially if your child is still very young since you have to consider your child’s capacity to absorb. Most students are average learners (obviously), so you will have to take the lessons according to your child’s learning pace. Never expect your small child to read complicated selections nor your teenager to get top marks in SAT exams.

Don’t follow strict schedules, as this can put undue pressure on your child. You should simply set an interesting routine for your child to follow. Children spend most of their time doing routine activities like getting up, eating hearty breakfasts, reading books, practising writing, doing light jobs about the place, etc. You must insist that they finish their routine activities before they can go outside or play with the computer. Even these routine activities change from day to day, but you have to ensure that your child completes these routine activities. You can add in occasional incentives or fun activities if they finish their routine tasks early.

You should try to enter into the spirit of home schooling with your child, since it is a good way of developing a strong relationship with your child and if you and your child can relate to each other, you will find it very much easier to handle curriculum struggles and motivation issues later on. Aside from motivating and guiding your child, you can also pursue some of your own interests like gardening or cooking. If your child sees you pursuing your own interests, then he or she will also be motivated to do likewise.

Since your child is into a home schooling program, you should not try to mimic a traditional schools environment. Try to use unusual methods when teaching your child. Home schooling is also about flexibility and creativity, so if you can achieve a light-hearted atmosphere, you can probably avoid burnout.

Just always try to bear in mind that with home schooling, you don’t have to structure your teaching methods in the normal way. You can just do things in an enjoyable way especially when teaching very young children, so that they learn naturally. Ensure you keep the day in the right balance to prevent burnout. Although your children may forget some of the day’s lessons, that’s all right too because somehow children develop their intelligence as well as their stature.

For sure, your children will always look back on your moments together and remember fondly how well you treated them. The old song goes: “… there’s no place like home” and for little students, home is the best place to learn the first lessons of life. If your teenagers are already in high school or in college, they can still pursue home schooling if they want to. That would also a good decision because you’d get to keep an eye on your children’s performance.

Parents always try to look after their children’s best interests, so, if after careful thought, you still reckon that home schooling is the best option for your family, then run with it. Just follow the advice mentioned above to prevent burnout. Make time for enjoyable activities from time to time in order to prevent monotony.

According to the National Center For Education Statistics, roughly 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a lot of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be an extreme statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the right-wing Christians who pushed for homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But nowadays the average homeschooling pupil is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys show that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where a lot of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the damaging environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative peer pressure.

As a result, we have a surprising mix of people who make up the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive education through a method that strengthens the bond between the various members of the family.

All these families have one major thing in common – a long standing commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are given a primary position. Many believe, and, probably, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their children in a more natural and caring environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can deal with them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious job of teaching. Everyone is put to work. The parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an educational experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater say over the type of religious and moral values that the child is learning. Even watching a film together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational as well as recreational.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is a must. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the task of saving money.

Just having a parent at home to look after, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there is just no room for complacency.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes occur, and there will be a lot of misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a richly rewarding experience.

In the last decade, home schooling has become very popular especially with middle and upper-middle class families. There have been lots of arguments over the years about home schooling, but experts claim that there are pros and cons in home schooling but it appears that the former outweigh the latter and so, a lot of families are now selecting home schooling over normal schools.

Cultures vary enormously and relationships within families are strongly affected by culture too. In some cultures, family bonds are fairly strong, but there are also those who don’t have very good relationships with other family members at all. However, by home schooling, family relationships are enhanced. Parents have to spend enough time with their children because of the home schooling program and the children will have to listen to their parents as well. Communication is much improved and both parties have to learn about the importance of both speaking and listening.

Many families prefer home schooling because of its flexibility. Since the cost of home education is a bit higher than normal schools, the financial standing of the household is very important. However, without thinking about the financial factor, many parents will still go for home schooling, because it can ensure their kids’ safety. Public schools often have dangerous environments that can affect children terribly, but if they are in a home schooling program, they can stay away from these predicaments and their parents will be there to guide them.

Rather than placing the kids at a public school, many parents prefer home schooling because the learning environment in the public schools is not that conducive. In public schools, very young pupils may experience problems that can affect them socially, mentally, and academically for a long time. Pedagogues who have conducted surveys, claim that children learn better in a safe environment surrounded by loved ones. A further advantage of home schooling is that children can learn according to their capacity. You can’t just deliver a new lesson, if the previous one hasn’t been learned yet. It may take longer, but the results are definitely better.

As said previously, home schooling is a bit more costly. However, if you think that you can reduce your child’s educational expenses, you’re probably wrong. Home schooling expenses are just about the same as those of traditional schools. However, if you participate in the forums of the parents of home-schoolers, you will find that there are ways to reduce costs. Of course, you will need to spend on the resource materials, computer, and internet, but you can also visit outside resources like cultural do’s, public libraries, etc..

You will get even more cost-cutting ideas, if you contact other parents. The Internet offers numerable possibilities and with a bit of research and homework, you can surely come up with a way to reduce the costs. If you don’t want to hire teachers, then you will have to learn the lessons as well. You have already learned the various subjects in your kids’ educational program, so you only need to review them. You can get further learning material online or the bookshop and later on, teach your kids.

Therefore, it is obvious, that home schooling is far and away the best option, particularly if your child is still rather young. So, it all depends on you and your child, whether they continue this form of education until they graduate for college.

Nobody actually knows when speed reading was first used, but it may well have been a long while ago. For centuries, reading was the privilege of a minority of the most highly-educated individuals in the world, the overwhelming majority of whom were monks and priests. This tiny, select group of men guarded their privilege and were loathe to instruct the general public to read. Moreover, throughout those hundreds of years there were relatively few books to read compared with nowadays. Books were also very expensive as they all had to be copied out by hand. Perhaps the only fact that has not altered is that the Bible was the most widespread book in existence and even now the Bible is the most prevalent book.

The world is rapidly becoming a place where people are slowly but surely giving up on books and becoming fixed in front of monitors or television screens. In such a world, parents must not fail to notice the importance of developing a zeal for reading in themselves and their children. Reading is a habit that should be established when the child is relatively young, so what can you do to promote this habit?

Well, there are several strategies you can employ, although one of the best to lead by example. Read with your child every day, even if its only for 10-15 minutes. Allow your child to see you reading. By this I mean, don’t only read in bed before you go to sleep, but instead of watching television from time to time and read your children a bed-time story. Encourage them to read too. You could also:

Enroll your child for reading lessons, if you really don’t have any time or your child is a little slow at reading. There are many well-structured after school reading classes that aspire to make books more appealing to children. They help children with pronunciation, sayings and phrases. These classes can be entertaining with cartoon characters and pictures, especially for young children,. They often use picture books, nursery rhymes, comical songs and short stories to spark the imagination of younger children.

You will have to learn how to arouse your child’s interest. If your child has a favorite character, pick a series of books that include this character. Endeavor to encourage your children to read proper books not comics. The style in comics frequently leaves a great deal to be desired with its sloppy English and street slang. As an alternative, go for series of books like Harry Potter or Tarzan.

You should build yourself a library of your own books. This may sound a little impressive, but after all, a library is only a collection of books. Begin with a good-looking bookshelf that you can easily add to. A skill like reading cannot be learned in only one place, so you cannot afford to leave all the difficult work to the day-school or even the after school curricula. You have to collect books that you think your child will like too. Use the Internet as a resource for learning about the modern reading games that will attract little children to the excellent and ancient art of reading,

Once you child is interested in reading for its own sake, you might read up on speed reading. Speed reading is best suited for educational revision and background reading. It’s greatly suited to cramming or studying for examinations. It is ideal for school and university. Nevertheless, the first job, before you can think about speed reading, is to get your child reading in the first place.

Do you think that passing time in traditional classrooms is a waste? For many people, that is true. For instance, an exam is due and the pupils are told to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after sitting the exam, they will surely forget 75% of those dates and names. That’s what the majority of students do when they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world, will surely be of more interest to you.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to know the significance of historically famous people and fateful events. However, through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way – that is your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the situation of the world today.

But, if you think that home schooling is the best method for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to undertake certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s learning progress by yourself.

Let’s just suppose that your kid is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you can start by just putting a map on the wall of your child’s bedroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history lessons by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been famous in the particular sport that your child follows. Apart from that, you can also examine the history of that specific sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.

For instance, if your child loves baseball, you can teach your child about the history of Negro Leagues, government hearings on the use of steroids, and other favourite hobbies at that time. Just remember that you can apply this concept to any interest such as dances and inventions. You can also have conversations with your child concerning current events or read interesting historical works and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use in home schooling, such as TV, maps, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Due of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, learning is best when it is done in an interesting way.

These methods are recommended if the child is still young, but once your child is older, you must choose an appropriate home schooling program that is suitable to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search online for these different programs. A good thing about these programs is that you can tailor them to suit the requirements of your child. However, you must see to it that all the lessons are studied by your child.

After you and your child have decided to go for home schooling, you must be prepared to make some changes to your life. The learning environment will now be in your home not at a school and through the various resources that you think best, such as a computer and the Internet.

There is access to a computer in nearly every household in the West nowadays and the rest of the world is catching up very quickly. Therefore, it is very important for you to have one at home too, because of the many advantages it can bring, especially if you have an Internet connection. Nowadays, you need to have have some computer experience, if you want even a reasonably-paid job, so learning how to use a computer must begin at school. You and your children can have a fantastic educational experience with a computer at home. Children of today should learn about this extremely important instrument at the very earliest age possible and one of the best ways to achieve that is through home schooling computer programs.

These days, even pre-school children are being taught how to make use of computers and their associated resources. If you decide to go for home schooling, you and your child will also spend a lot of your time making use of a computer and the Internet. Educating your children will be a lot better when done online, because of the diverse resources available there. Your child will be provided with exceptional educational resources, from which he/she will benefit hugely not least since employment market trends today involve the Internet.

One of the biggest ethnic groups who prefers to make use of home schooling is the African Americans because some see certain society problems and they can keep themselves informed about their own heritage through home schooling. The parents of children from minority groups can help their children learn more about their history by having an Internet connection at home. Children’s education can be more strongly encouraged by parents and they can also assist in strengthening the psyche of their children as well. Parents can educate their children about their own particular history by means of the various online resources.

Is there anything quite as frustrating as not being able to get to sleep at night? Then you do finally doze off and the alarm wakes you up 2 hours later and you, quite frankly, feel like a zombie! Let’s see what you can do to help you sleep.

We all have bedtime habits such as watching TV or surfing the bed, this makes your brain work hard as you are tired so it won’t switch off when you want it to.

You are preventing yourself from sleeping as however relaxed you feel, you are concentrating on that TV show etc. Turn them off and you turn off your brain.

A great tip to stop lying awake is to read in bed. You don’t want a juicy novel however; you want a text book that is mind numbingly boring. You will be reading the words but your brain just won’t be interested and will just close itself down.

Exercise is a good way of promoting a good night’s sleep. Really push yourself so both body and mind are exhausted. A good sleeping pattern should follow.

Resistance and cardio workouts are the best for this. Once the initial burst of energy has dissipated, your body will start and wind down until it just wants to go to sleep.

If you are visually assisted, remove your glasses or contacts before you go to bed, there are two reasons for this.

After wearing these all day your eyes need to rest too. By nor forcing them to stay open to watch TV etc they will relax and close easily.

How many of us are late night snack people and feel that we can’t sleep until we’ve eaten? This is a fallacy that you have brought about yourself by eating too late. You will want to go to sleep but your brain will keep you awake by thinking about what’s in the fridge. There is also the probability of weight gain to consider here, so knock the late night eating on the head.

In addition to sleep, the author also regularly blogs regarding industrial heavy duty shelf brackets and floating glass shelf brackets.
