Protein is a macronutrient that is made up of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sometimes sulfur. Protein is the only nutrient that contains nitrogen. This makes protein both an essential nutrient and a potentially harmful toxin. Proteins are generally synthesized mainly in the liver. The liver is like the central processing unit for protein synthesis.

We utilize proteins on a daily basis – we usually consume protein in the food that we eat. The body uses proteins for rebuilding muscles, transporting molecules throughout the body, and even as enzymes that act as catalysts for reactions on the body. Proteins compose about 45% of the human body and without them it would not be possible to carry out the very basic functions of life.

The metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that occur in the human body and in all living organisms to maintain life. These processes allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and to respond to their environments. When speaking in terms of health and fitness, the metabolism is the term that is used to describe the system that the body uses when burning calories. If you have a high metabolism, your body burns more of the calories that you eat on a daily basis.

Protein metabolism is simply the breaking down of proteins into glucose. Glucose is the bodies’ preferred source of energy. So protein synthesis is simply the process in which the body breaks down protein to create energy sources. It describes how the body breaks down protein foods and makes protein tissues. The body then breaks down the tissue proteins in the production of energy.

So proteins are macronutrients that are responsible for the transport of molecules in the body, rebuilding tissues, and catalysts for chemical reactions. The metabolism is the process in which the body breaks down foods and uses them to maintain life. Protein synthesis is the process in which the body uses protein tissues to produce energy.
