While there is no conclusive proof that antioxidants keep skin from aging, experts do agree they have the ability to ‘capture’ free radicals and may protect us from certain diseases. Antioxidant-rich foods can also give us a healthier, glowing complexion.

According to Susan M. Kleiner, R.D., Ph.D, a Seattle-based nutritionist, eating foods rich in vitamin antioxidants is best. “There’s no replacement for getting nutrients through food. The body absorbs and assimilates them far better than in supplement form.”

Kleiner suggests following the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Guide Pyramid, and eating three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit each day. Choose at least one citrus fruit, such as an orange, a tangerine, or a grapefruit, for vitamin C. To increase beta-carotene intake, eat at least two orange-yellow or leafy green vegetables each day.

Eat Right for Younger Looking Skin

Eating healthy equals younger looking skin. Drinking a cup of orange juice and eating one raw carrot provides twice the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of vitamin C and beta-carotene. The RDA for vitamin E is harder to meet, especially for those on a low-fat diet.

“Don’t be afraid to add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil to your diet, or to eat some nuts or seeds,” advises Dr. Kleiner.

The following guideline can be used for RDAs for three of the most common antioxidant nutrients, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene; good sources and how best to maximize benefits of each are included.

Vitamin C: RDA at least 60 mg. (1/2 cup orange juice = 70 mg.) Citrus fruits and juices and tomatoes are good sources of vitamin C. Eat whole fruit for extra fiber. Avoid juice in glass containers, and heat-pasteurized juice. Light and heat destroy some of the vitamin C.

Vitamin E: RDA 8 mg for women / 10 mg. for men (1 tablespoon of canola oil = 9 mg.) Good sources include nuts, seeds and their oils, fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, halibut, and trout, and wheat germ. Use canola, olive, or another vegetable oil in place of butter or margarine when cooking.

Beta-carotene: no established RDA. Expert Dr. Kleiner, however, recommends 5-6 mg. ( One carrot = 12 mg.) Orange and yellow vegetables, and leafy green vegetables, including broccoli, are all good sources. Instead of potato chips or popcorn for an evening snack while watching television, opt for prepackaged, washed and peeled baby carrots.

If you feel you are unable to meet the RDAs through diet alone, by all means take an all-in-one antioxidant vitamin supplement a day, but continue to pay attention to rich food sources.

Summary

Because many over-the-counter cosmetics containing antioxidants don’t have enough to be totally affective by themselves, it is best to ‘feed’ them to your skin in combination with a healthy, antioxidant rich diet for younger looking skin.

In recent years, I have developed a great love for tea. I used to only drink coffee or diet soda, but I had to change my daily beverages because I developed an intolerance to the strong caffeine in coffee. Soda was also beginning to bother my stomach. A colleague suggested green tea as a replacement.

After learning all the great benefits of drinking tea like preventing disease, slowing aging and boosting weight loss efforts, I thought I should try green tea. Tea contains phytochemicals that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities that combat free radicals and the resulting damage. Tea also increases metabolism and aids in decreasing fat. All of this without any calories.

In my research, I also stumbled across wu yi tea, which has similar health benefits. I could not seem to find any at the store, so I stuck with my friend’s suggestion.

It did not turn out as planned! The tea had a strange, grassy sort of taste that I just could not get used to. Maybe the green color just made me think of grass. I tried it again and again.

I even began flavoring the tea with sweeteners and cream. Lemon did not work either. And of course, adding all that sugar was not doing much for my once healthy drink.

After searching endlessly for wu yi tea at local markets, I decided to order some from the internet. You have to be careful because I did find some auto-ship scams. I finally went with a trusted wu yi source and ordered.

Wu yi tea is a lot more like black tea in flavor. It is processed a bit more than green tea, so the flavor is similar to black tea, but wu yi tea maintains more of its nutrients like green tea.

The perfect combination! Wu yi tea still maintains all of the health benefits, yet the flavor is more desirable.

And oddly enough, even though both wu yi tea and green tea contain caffeine, I do not experience the jittery feeling when I drink it. It does not even bother my sleep if I drink it in the evening. However, if you have been sensitive to caffeine or have regular bouts of insomnia, you probably should not drink any past noon. You will just have to see how it works for you.

I found that wu yi tea is great over ice as well. Make sure you brew it and then let it cool so you do not water down the great flavor. You might even try using green tea with the wu yi tea. I have found a great concoction combining wu yi tea, green tea and an herbal fruit infusion. The blend takes away from the grassy taste and allows a nice, fruity drink with zero calories.

You can always try green tea first like I did, but I would recommend wu yi tea.

Simple! Because wu yi tea is oolong tea. Confusing? It is not, really, but first you should know a few things about the various types of tea.

Camellia sinensis is the plant for which all real teas are harvested. The final product, or variety, depends on how it is processed.

Over 75% of tea produced in the world is the highly popular black tea. The leaves are harvested and then withered by leaving them out. The remaining moisture is then rolled out via a machine (CTC) or the old-fashioned way by hand (orthodox). The hand method leaves the tea in tact more while the CTC method is a bit harsher leaving the leaves more crushed.

They are then spread out in a cool, damp place to oxidize. This turns the leaves from green to brownish color. The tea leaves are then dried using hot air. Finally, the tea is sorted into various grades depending the final leaf size.

Green tea processing is quite like black tea processing, however, there is no oxidative process. After drying, the tea is steamed before rolling and the final drying stage. Although this leaves more viable phytochemicals (nutrients) in green tea, the tea does not taste very much like black tea. It has a sort of bitter flavor.

Now, white tea is a rather special little tea. It is harvested only few days a year when the buds on the Camellia sinensis plant have yet to open. White tea processing is like green tea, but the young leaves lend to a very delicate, smooth flavor and aroma. We are finally seeing more white tea distribution, though it was once reserved for Chinese nobility. Because of its difficulty in harvesting, it is rather pricey.

Perhaps oolong is the best tea because it is not as pricey as white tea, but it has a great flavor more like black tea. Plus, it retains most of its nutrients and weight loss capabilities like green tea and white tea. Unlike white or green tea, oolong tea is oxidized to some extent, which is what lends to the flavor. However, it still has most of its nutrients and it can be harvested like green or black tea using more mature leaves.

Okay, so why do we call some oolong tea, wu yi tea? Think of it more as a brand name, but perhaps a bit more special. Wu yi tea is oolong tea so named for the chain of mountains where it grows. The Wuyi mountain chain in Northeastern China is home to the Camellia sinensis plant where wu yi tea is harvested.

Think Florida and oranges, Idaho and potatoes, New Zealand and kiwis. Though oranges, potatoes and kiwis are grown in other areas, the final product may not match those grown in areas that have the perfect climate and soil for the very best end product.

Once only considered for nobility, just like white tea, wu yi has grown in popularity with the world due to its great flavor, nutritional value and weight loss capabilities.

I am sure that you have heard of all the benefits of tea. If not, let me explain. Tea is all derived from the same plant, Camellia Sinensis, whether it is white, green, black or oolong (a.k.a. wu yi tea). The final product depends on the length of fermentation after the tea is picked.

You may run across some products that are called tea, but they are not true tea from the Camellia sinensis plant. Tea concoctions or energy drinks are often sugary beverages flavored like tea with artificial flavor. Herbal teas, on the other hand, are not from the Camellia Sinensis plant unless they have been blended, but they are usually healthy because they too contain beneficial nutrients.

Real tea, however, is beneficial to health due to their phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are the components in plants that protect the plant from cellular damage that occurs due to free radicals. They also help the plant replenish damaged cells and fix the damage. Phytochemicals are in all plants, and when you consume plants, you adopt the benefits of these phytochemicals.

Phytochemicals improve health at all levels because they work at the very basic cellular level. When we are exposed to free radicals (environmental pollutants, carcinogens, UV rays, food etc.), they damage our cells via a process called oxidation. Free radicals have an extra electron (negative charge), so they seek out another electron to make them neutral.

When this occurs, more free radicals are produced. This oxidative stress wreaks havoc on the body by destroying or weakening cellular membranes and mutating genetic material inside the cells. This leads to poor tissue health and weakened organ systems.

Free radicals are partially to blame for overall poor health, lack of energy, disease and aging.

Tea, including wu yi (oolong) tea, contains massive amounts of phytochemicals that are able to fight and neutralize free radicals, preventing the ill effects and also repairing some of the damage. In terms of weight loss, tea contains zero calories. If you merely replace high calorie beverages with this healthier alternative, you will likely lose weight. Diet soda cannot offer the nutrients as tea does, and the artificial sweeteners in diet soda are also linked to increased sugar cravings and weight gain.

Wu yi tea and other teas are also capable of increasing thermogenesis and metabolism. Green tea extract has been studied the most and has proven to be effective in burning fat. The results are even greater when exercise is included because it helps the body burn fat even after exercise is complete.

So, what about wu yi tea compared to other teas? Black tea still contains numerous phytochemicals, but not as much as wu yi or green tea. White tea has not been studied as much as green tea, and wu yi tea is more similar to green tea. In the end, it comes down to flavor. Green tea has a rather grassy taste, while wu yi tea is very mild in flavor and more similar to black tea.

Adding a few cups of wu yi tea to a healthy diet can help boost your efforts at weight loss. Add exercise to the regime and you will likely see the pounds melt away!
